Personal Injury Patients Now Treated While Sleeping

CBS TV-5 Phoenix

PHOENIX, July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A local chiropractor has introduced a unique approach that moves beyond traditional chiropractic care.  Dr. Jason Hawkins, D.C., owner of Align Chiropractic, a Phoenix, Arizona based practice, is one of the few chiropractors certified to work with patients who are under anesthesia.  "This approach is for those cases in which traditional manipulative techniques are not effective," claims Dr. Hawkins.  "In particular, we want to show people there is an option between conventional medical care and surgery-especially in Personal Injury cases where the pain is extreme."
Dr. Hawkins has seen patients with chronic pain immediately opt for a surgical solution before even looking into non-surgical options, such as manipulation under anesthesia.  This allows the chiropractor to accomplish what would normally be too painful for the conscious patient to endure. It also allows the Doctor to perform treatment without resistance from the injured patient who would normally tense up due to the additional pain. "This is not for everyone," states Dr. Hawkins.  "Perhaps 1% to 5% of patients are candidates.  We must carefully screen patients to make sure it is an appropriate treatment."  This means that there has been stagnation in patient progress while receiving traditional medical, physical therapy or chiropractic care.  Careful screening, including an MRI, is used to evaluate if a patient is suited for the procedure.
The procedure takes place in an outpatient clinic, attended by a medical doctor, an anesthesiologist, and two chiropractors.  The procedure is conducted over three days and the results can be dramatic. Most often, Dr. Hawkins work is referred not only by Personal Injury attorneys but also medical doctors attempting to prevent unnecessary surgery for their clients.

The procedure is particularly effective for reducing scar tissue in the muscles and for patients with shoulder injuries.  Traditional chiropractic manipulation would be too painful for the patient to endure, so a sedation approach can be highly effective. Most often health insurance can cover the procedure.
